Case Study: Cinema in the Garden

Today's, and at the same time the first in a series of articles on our website, will be dedicated to an unconventional way of creating an open-air cinema, right in your own garden.

When designing a home, seldom is space allocated for a dedicated cinema room. This is natural and understandable, considering basic needs. However, the dynamic development of cinematography, the increase in image and sound quality, lead to a revolutionary change in how we experience movies.

Technology...

In the past, the obvious and only choice was to go to a cinema to enjoy unforgettable experiences impossible to achieve in the comfort of one's home.

Nowadays, it is widely known that such experiences can be achieved in the comfort of one's home, and in some cases, even offering better quality than in a cinema (due to the fact that we don't project the image on such a massive screen at home)! Combined with the growing number of streaming platforms, the obvious conclusion is that you can create a cinema in your own home. That's why in newly built homes, a dedicated space for a cinema or multimedia zone is no longer uncommon.

But what about people who built their homes at a time when technology wasn't as advanced? Is the hope for a cinema lost? Not necessarily.

We present to you a unique garden cinema project, which is the perfect solution for those who dream of their own cinema space but do not have enough room in their home. All you need is a bit of space in the garden for a small building.

What about building permits?

No special permits are required for such a construction – a simple notification is enough, thanks to the small size of the building. So you can forget about many formalities related to obtaining a construction permit.

The presented 70m2 cottage project includes a small corridor with a built-in wardrobe, leading to a toilet or recreational area, and from there, just a step to the cinema, covered with an elegant curtain.

The recreational area (29.48m2) has been taken into account in the project.

This is a place for relaxation, breaks between screenings, without the need to leave the building. At the same time, it's an ideal place for small gatherings with friends without disturbing the comfort of other household members. Large windows with a view of the remaining part of the garden add charm and harmony.

The cinema room, with an area of 22.48m2.

Entering it, you experience a complete acoustic and visual transformation compared to the rest of the cottage. The walls of the cinema room are finished with appropriate acoustic materials to minimize unwanted sound wave reflections. The entire finish has been chosen to ensure functionality aligns with aesthetics.

In the cinema room, there are two rows of four-seater sofas, which can be replaced with cinema seats, reducing the number of seats from 8 to 6. Thanks to the use of a platform, people in the front do not obstruct the view of those at the back. The unique atmosphere of the modern cinema room is accentuated by discreet LED lighting on the ceiling and spotlights on the walls.

Technical specifications of the cinema room.

Taking into account the essential parameters of the room, a 4K Sony laser projector was selected along with an Adeo screen, providing a 128-inch diagonal projection in a 21:9 format. For sound, a Dolby Atmos 5.2.4 system was used, which includes three front speakers, two on the sides, four in the ceiling, and two subwoofers. Such a configuration ensures a fantastic spatial sound experience. For automation, light control, and curtain control, a Control4 system was used, allowing easy control of the entire system, including lighting and curtains, using a universal remote or smartphone.

Designing and building a garden cinema has a total cost starting at 300,000 PLN. The price of such a project depends on various factors, including the size of the cottage, the choice of cinema equipment, and the finish.
